East End Girls (EEG)
Want to meet new people, explore new places, challenge yourself and have fun? Then join the East End Girls. Email me or call 020 8220 6919. Our walk dates for 2009 are as follows: Feb - Sat 28th We're back out there and loving it. As the days are still short, we're walking in the London environment but come April we plan to be back on the Thames Path. In 2008, we made it from Woolwich Foot Tunnel as far as Marlow in 6 walks and walked through amazing areas and scenery. If you scroll down you'll see some photos from the walk. We enjoyed great weather, lovely coffee and lunch stops and mostly the company of wonderful women who know how to have a laugh, be supportive and talk (usually non stop) Jan '09 Got off to a great start with a bunch of 10 women including Nic who had been absent since Sept '06, how lovely it was to have her back. We walked from Hendon Central to Manor House following the Capital Ring which we walked in it's entirety in 2007.
Here are a few more photos from the walk :-
Teresa and Sue make it to the top of the first
real hill
Cajsa and Lindsey lead the colourful group through Highgate Woods. Lunch was definitely on the cards at this point as you can see from the determination on their faces.
The last bit of the path along the Parkway Walk which is on a disused railway, was much muddier than in June 2007. Still no trains, only the long platforms remain.
2008, we started walking the Thames Path. As we walk, we are seeing many of London's iconic sites such as the Thames Barrier, the Dome, Tower Bridge, The Gerkin etc., we've got a real feel for the river in it's different phases and ages and passed through some wonderful scenery on route. It's been such a wonderful walk allowing us to see city and countryside. We've been covering about 10 miles per walk but there are opt out points if less miles are your limit. This is us at the start of the path in March 2008. We started at the Woolwich foot tunnel.
One of London's landmarks all be it in the East, the Thames Barrier. No time to visit unfortunately.
On the second section, walking along the Embankment in central London.
The group is continually growing and we were delighted to welcome 5 new members onto our last walk. If you are interested in spending one Saturday or Sunday a month in the company of wonderful women who enjoy walking, food and wine, laughter and chat, then look no further. The group is supportive, caring and I know we've all made fantastic friends since we started walking together. For a chat and more information call me on 07941 246619, 020 8220 6919 or email me. Your first walk is always FREE so you can get a feel for the group and then you can buy packages of 5 walks at £30 or 10 walks at £54 (buy 10 get one free). 2008 - Read about our trip to the Lakes in early June and our Radio 4 'Ramblings' broadcast. History of the East End Girls (EEG) In February 2006, having signed up for the 60k Breakthrough to Breast Cancer Aviva Walk, I started to run a local training group for local women doing the walk. I thought it would be a great motivator for me but I did not appreciate what a effect this would have on my life. I had entered a team of three for the walk under the name East End Girls and as the training walks started and new people came along, many joined the team. On the actual day 16 wonderful women walked as East End Girls and all of them did it great style and had so much fun. You can read all about our walk here.
As well as fun and great achievement, we all developed a fantastic bond which means that we now walk once a month because all these wonderful women, having discovered walking, wanted to walk more. When asked why they continue to walk with the group this is what they say:- "Because it is so much fun!! We have a great walk, a lot of laughs and usually a nice lunch along the way" - Lindsey Smith. "I continue because it's fun, I like the company, the exercise, seeing new parts of London I haven't been to before and building really great relationships" - Teresa Bailey. " I love the company and everyone is great, funny and looks after me. The BEST thing about the group is the family feel and a chance to walk, talk and not worry about much" - Zara Jones As well as local walks meaning that we are very familiar with Epping Forest, we do set ourself challenges. In 2007 we walked the Capital Ring - a 78 mile walk encircling inner London which we did over 7 months.
Also last year 3 of the girls joined me on the Inca Trail in Peru and 4 of us also walked the Isle of Wight Coast Path.
Socialising is important too so we do have some great nights out and always make sure we have our coffee and lunch breaks when walking.
...and why is the group growing? Because - "Lovely girls, good fun, the variety of walks and it keeps me fit." - Emma Dakin "I have met a bunch of really lovely, helpful and inspiring women and it is so enjoyable talking to them whilst doing the walking." - Usha Chudasama "Great people and its good for me to get out and forget about stressful work." - Christine Bridges |
